ABOUT US

 MISSION STATEMENT:

A DIGITAL AND PRINT PUBLICATION DEDICATED TO HELPING CREATIVES AND CHANGEMAKERS MOVE FROM POINT A TO POINT B.

Where it began

From founder & CEO Danielle Irene

A couple of years ago, I was standing in the checkout line of my local grocery store. There, I had nothing to do but wait for my turn. My eyes glanced over to the magazines and tabloids displayed to my left. You know the ones: celebrities we’ve seen too much of on the covers, again and again. I suppose there’s nothing wrong with that on its own. But what about the people who worked just as hard and were never put in the spotlight?

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve wanted to found something that facilitates change. After years of creating content for other publications, I was ready to break away and start something of my own. But I struggled to answer the burning questions to success: what sets my magazine apart from everyone else’s? What do I offer that you can’t get anywhere else? I had some ideas, but I needed help. This is the moment “I” became “we.” I plotted with two really great creatives I’ve worked with in the past, Ry and Ndemazea, to turn this vision into a reality. Our combined drive, creativity, and strategy were vehicles that ultimately helped us lift off from point A, and now we’re on our way to point B. Only together were we able to take off—and now we’re flying. It’s not always a straight line, but we’re off the runway. All I want is for Aspirants to be your airplane, too.

The direction & look

From creative director Ndemazea Fonkem & COO Ry X

Aspirants Co carries with it an aesthetic design that is reminiscent of childhood innocence - nostalgic, warm, comforting, and personal while still appearing professional. That’s the message of Aspirants at its core: to cater to our creative sides in an elegant way.

Sleek lines of paper airplanes along with a comforting pops of yellow help to remind you of the easier times, and that you have places to go and things to seek.

This is your path, your story; from point A to point B, just like a paper airplane. With all that being saidsometimes it's good to venture outside your comfort zones. The color yellow may be warm and happy, but it is also bold, and we can only hope this emphasis on being bold inspires you to go out, and well, aspire to inspire.

So go, be bold, make the phone calls you need to make, be an aspirant, and we'll be here when you've gotten to where you want to be. Aspirants is more about you than it is about us; it's for the people, by the people. These are the unheard stories from the artists often unseen.

ABOUT THE NAME

“Aspirants? That's kind of a weird name.”

The word derives from aspire. Cambridge Dictionary defines aspirant as, “someone who very much wants to achieve something.” Simple enough.

Aspirants prides itself on being a platform for recognizing those who aren’t highlighted enough for their supreme work and dedication simply because the right mix of privilege and chance never struck them. This is not a magazine that takes pride in featuring celebrities we see everywhere or on publishing content from creators you’ll never get to know personally. Rather, we are a magazine for the people; this is for you, for us, for the person who won’t make the front page of an ordinary tabloid—you can make the front page here.

Q: Is this a print or digital publication?

A: Both!

Q: How often do you publish print issues?

A: Four times a year, every three months. In 2019, that'll be February 1, May 1, August 1, and November 1.

Q: How often do you publish online article excerpts?

A: Every Monday and Friday following an issue release.

Q: Why are you guys called Aspirants?

A: That, my friend, is a story that can be found right above.

Q: Why do you guys have such an awesome Instagram feed?

A: Because we have an awesome person who manages social media (Ry).

Q: Why do you guys have such awesomely designed magazines?

A: Because we have an awesome person who designs them (Ndemazea).

Q: What do you use to print/sell?

A: We use a platform called Lulu! It's cheaper and easier to use than other platforms that we've used before, and the company is also working to empower marginalized voices! Click here to join Lulu with our referral code and get your very first copy of your first published book free! (You'll only get a free copy if you use the link.)
