Sophia Messa is a 19-year-old Brazilian-American pop singer. As a rising star in the American pop scene, she definitely has the characteristics of any major musical force, but what truly makes her unique is her approach and the ingredients that establish her as a landmark artist.
Sophia grew up in downtown New York City, a city synonymous with performance and talent. While music has been apart of her life from a young age, her background was not exactly pop-friendly. “I grew up singing pop music but it was mandatory for vocal majors at my performing arts school to sing opera,” she said. “I did that in school but always wrote and sang pop music throughout my childhood.”
But recently, Sophia has exploded into the music scene after signing with Arista Records, the former home to household names such as Whitney Houston, TLC, P!nk, Aretha Franklin, and other notable artists—just 24 hours after meeting CEO, David Massey. With over 55,000 followers on Instagram, Sophia has garnered much praise. Nylon Magazine lauded her as “ready to take over the pop world,” and L’Officiel USA cited her as a “force to be reckoned with.”
Sophia released her latest single, “What Am I Gonna Do With You,” on August 14. The release followed the success of her debut “moneydontfixlonely” which has over three million streams, as well as “offyourface,” a track Billboard referred to as “infectious.”
“My music is pop music but definitely left-of-center and edgy,” she remarked. “I hope the music makes people feel something, anything. When I go to listen to music, I want to listen to something that’s going to make me feel an emotion whether it’s happy or sad, and I hope my music can be that outlet of emotion for other people.”
